In an ongoing effort to reduce spending, lawmakers in the u.s. House of Representatives has been eyeing additional nutrition assistance Program, or SNAP, formerly known as food stamps.
Under the House Republican plan for fiscal year 2012, it will SNAP the funding cut by $ 127 billion over ten years and converted into a block grant program. For California, which translates into about $ 10 million in cuts, resulting in a reduction in both benefits for low-income families or strict guidelines about who qualifies.
Some California 3.7 million currently enrolled in the program, more than double the number from ten years ago, which helps low-income families buy the food.
To raise awareness about the upcoming cuts, Congress candidate Norman Solomon goes shopping in Petaluma on Monday kicked off food Food Stamp challenge, an experiment about what living on food stamps is really like.
One person in the program receive $ 126 a month or only $ 31.50 per week, to make shopping more challenging.
